Trend Watch Gen-Y is Adopting Personal Branding from their Parents - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Today I felt like playing Sherlock Holmes to discover new trends I was seeing with online personal branding. Robert Scoble is everyones favorite and notorious geek blogger, who writes content about technology and will soon be directing his own podcast show on FastCompany.tv. Millions of people venture to his Scobleizer blog everyday awaiting one of his now famous posts. Scoble isnt just active in the blogosphere, but on Twitter. Almost every interview I watch that hes in, he speaks about Twitter and the different conversations he has using the social network. Overall, he is one of the finest examples and success stories when it comes to personal branding. By becoming the human face of Microsoft, he established a brand name and was recruited by Podtech, where has boosted his brand name even more with his Scoble Show. Finally, he obtained enough press and traffic that Fast Company gave him his own online TV show. Hes certainly nearing the maturity level of the personal branding lifecycle. Robert Scoble is Gen-X, but let me draw your attention to his son, Patrick Scoble. As the son of a problogger celebrity, its only obvious that he would be inclined to blog as well and HE DOES! His blog is called Mini Scobleizer and he even uses Twitter. What youll notice is that his content is fairly short and specific and relates to technology problems that he is currently facing with Apple products. Both Scobles use WordPress.com. Patrick has just as many, if not more comments than his father, and they are both quite entertaining. Conclusions When Gen-X becomes highly involved in social media, their children are more inclined to participate as well. When Gen-Y matures, the next generation will be even more susceptible to technological advancements, especially when they see the successes their elders have had. It will be an easier transition for the coming generations to build communities and to engage because their parents will have the resources, know-how and be able to link to their website/blog. When your father has a big brand name, your brand equity will also increase to a certain extent. This relates back to a post I made back in July of 2007, when I explained how the sum of the brands that surround your life, play an integral role with your brand status. The majority of Patricks traffic comes from his fathers blog and possibly Dave Winers Scripting blog. If Seth Godin had a child that blogged, they would reap the same benefits, but would gain all the comments that Seth would have gotten if he opened his blog up to them.

How women in the workplace should be represented - Debut Not too long ago, I was stood at the bus stop when an older man opposite me struck up a conversation. He asked, “Are you on your way into work?” “Yep!” I responded cheerfully. “Oh dear.” His features took a downturn as he scoffed out, “Awful that. Women shouldn’t be working like they do these days. They should just stay at home, where they belong.” I will admit, I was a little speechless at this archaic announcement. I just nervously laughed off the comment and shuffled away, knowing that if I responded, I’d launch into a mad rant at a random stranger that wouldn’t do justice to the very complex nuance of this particular subject. The mere fact that pre-defined thoughts like this one even cross people’s minds demonstrates that there’s still very clearly a bias that exists in this world when it comes to gender. Sure, this man’s comment was a little on the extreme side, but the ethos applies all the same; we’re not yet at an equal point in society.   This man may think that women shouldn’t work at all. To dispute that point, I’d like to showcase all of the brilliant work that women can do in the workplace, and why it’s vital for our future. So I went to the fellow women of this company to suss out their thoughts and feelings on the topic, in celebration of International Women’s Day. Representing the business Debut is known for an extremely supportive atmosphere I immediately noticed this on day one, and it couldn’t apply more than when talking about the women who work here. As Office Manager Jennifer Burroughs puts it, “I have never worked in an office where the women support each other so avidly and organically. We build each other up, never shoot each other down, and provide each other with a safe space to listen/brainstorm/share.” But it’s not just day-to-day activities that this type of behaviour flourishes in. Many of the women at Debut have taken the lead on some momentous tasks that proved imperative to the business. From leading an entire (and very complex) office move, to representing Debut in front of stakeholders and clients alike, to organising entire events for our students and building relationships for the business. To create true equality in businesses, we need to address several components; pay, management, opportunities and especially attitudes. Or, as Senior Partnerships Manager Hannah Levy puts it; “never be gendered in your approach or comment on something someone has done and attribute it to their gender.” It’s not just about ticking boxes to make the company look socially acceptable in a press release. It’s examining the culture of a business, and seeing what can be changed to create an inclusive atmosphere in day-to-day life. One great example is the company Bumble, where founder Whitney Wolfe encourages women to discuss their salary, progression, job satisfaction and incorporates policies like micro-agile working, allowing women to continue to thrive around other commitments. Daniella Loudon, Senior Partnerships Manager (and representative of the Female Founders network in London) discusses the perceived thoughts on what it means to be a leader, dismissing the typical ‘alpha’ approach. “I have often been told in my career that I need to be more assertive to get ahead. From family members such as mothers who have balanced their family life and careers single-handedly to political leaders and female CEOs, and even RuPaul (of course). Olga Kardasi, Partnerships Success Lead at Debut, previously worked for the charity All Walks Beyond the Catwalk, founded by Caryn Franklin, Erin OConnor and Debra Bourne. For her, the founders’ ethos for the charity is a huge inspiration, as it was made “to challenge the fashion industry’s dependence on unachievable and limited body and beauty ideals by respecting diversity.” This lesson can be applied more broadly. When we examine gender equality, we should also be considering the differences for diverse and minority women out there. These can include people of colour, to LGBTQ+ members, to women with disabilities and employees from lower class backgrounds. We should consider how these factors affect their day-to-day lives, look at how we can assist and not fall into the bracket of just supporting the most privileged of women. Whilst the publishing of pay gap figures certainly drew attention to the issue, it didn’t necessarily change the broader societal attitudes. Many still sneer at the word ‘feminism’, or simply deny that there’s even an issue at all. Grace Harris, our Content and Community Manager, discussed what she would eventually like to see when it comes to gender inclusivity: “Were not here to fill a quota, were here because we deserve to be and because equality is something that should be morally supported by all, and not seen as political correctness or a HR target. Ditto for everyone who falls outside of the cisgendered, white, male norm.” We must call out inequality when we see it, and not be complacent, no matter who we are. We should also recognise the concept of judging someones ability based on their gender. Kony Perifanou, Partnerships Executive, points out the problem with the phrase, ‘that’s a guy thing’. “There’s no such thing as that. We need to stop assigning abilities, professions and skills to genders. Anyone should have the opportunity to do what they like.” Women have done some amazing things so far in the workplace, but they can only go so far within the constraints of gender inequality. Resolve to be grateful - At this time of year, its natural to be thinking of making changes and starting new habits. Have you considered incorporating gratitude into your new years resolutions? As an employee, whether or not your company incorporates being thankful into its mission, do you feel appreciated? Do you believe you should expect more than a paycheck? Bryan Miles, CEO and co-founder of eaHELP, a provider of virtual executive assistants, knew he wanted “gratitude” to be featured prominently in his company’s values. Here are his suggestions for all leaders and employees to consider this week  and all year long: 1. Don’t wait to be grateful.  Regardless of your position in an organization,  cultivate gratitude as a core part of your work. “Don’t wait until you’re leading a team, a division or a company to become a grateful leader, Miles says.  If you do, when you start telling people you’re grateful for them once you’re in the position you want, people won’t buy it.” He suggests you make sure those around you right now understand that you’re grateful for the many ways they help you each and every day. 2.  Be humble.  Miles believes that if  you’re a leader, you know down in your gut that what you’re leading doesn’t have much to do with you. He suggests you acknowledge that you’ve achieved your role, in part, because  your team works hard  and takes advantage of market opportunities. “Your team looks to you for leadership and for guidance, but when it comes down to the day-to-day wins and losses that actually make up your business, you need to know that those don’t have much to do with you, Miles says. You need to be grateful for the team that powers the engine of your business.”  Similarly, as a team member, recognize your role in ensuring your team continues to move forward. Be grateful for everyone around you, and don’t be shy about expressing appreciation. 3.  Acknowledge that your success depends on others.  Being a grateful employee will make you a smarter employee.  Admitting that you don’t know everything  and that everything you’ve ever learned that’s made you successful has come from someone or something else helps improve your standing in a team. “Being grateful for those from whom you’ve learned is essential if you want to stay humble and teachable and will actually propel you forward in your career,” Miles says. 4.  Be sincere.  In many cases, being grateful can be disarming. As a leader or a team member, when you are thankful and express it â€" sincerely and frequently â€" it will often make people stop in their tracks. “Genuine gratitude is pretty rare in today’s society, which is a shame, but expressing real gratitude sets people apart,” Miles says.  If you lead a team, your employees will know when your gratitude is genuine, and they are more likely to put in extra effort. “Grateful leaders have stronger, more effective, more loyal teams,” he says.  As an employee, demonstrating gratitude can help set you apart from others in your organization. Consider how being appreciative at work and expressing those feelings to all team members can help make your organization more successful. When you do, you give the people who work with you even more reasons to be thankful  â€"  at Thanksgiving and all year long. Miles says this approach has helped contribute to the success of his organization. He believes his success could very well end, should he fail to incorporate gratitude for those around him. “Gratitude is the only lasting motivator of change, he says.
